Getting hand-off notifications

If you'd like to get notified via email or SMS when you're about to go on call, but you can't wait for us to roll out hand-off notifications, one solution is to import your schedule into a calendaring program (such as iCal, Google Calendar, etc.) and set up reminders.

I use Google Calendar and to keep this simple, I'm only on one calendar where Baskar and I alternate support duties every 4 days.  First let's grab the URL for this calendar

I'll give that URL to Google Calendar, which seems to update once a day or so.  Unless we're booking some last-minute overrides, the calendar will usually be up-to-date.

Voila:

Next head over to the calendar settings page, and change the notification settings for this calendar.  I've set up SMS for my account, so I'll give myself an email 12 hours before I go one call, and an SMS 15 minutes before I go on call.

As a little bonus, since there's only two of us in this case, I'm also going to ask Baskar for his secret calendar URL, to add it as well.  Then, I'll send myself a reminder when he goes on call, to remind myself that I am off call.

If you are an account owner or an admin user, you will be able to see other users' calendar URLs.

Exactly what I was looking for.  On a side note, if you're part of a few schedules then be ready for the (Google) calendar import to take a bit while they sync up.  Not a biggie, but I thought it wasn't working right when really it was just Google not catching up to PD.
