  2. Tap System Notification Settings and ensure All PagerDuty notifications are enabled.

On-Call Boosters

On-Call Boosters provide push notifications about changes to your on-call schedules. You will immediately receive a push notification when:

  • You are added to a schedule
  • You are removed from a schedule
  • Changes are made to your on-call shifts within the next eight weeks (e.g., overrides, reordering)

🚧

Note

Please note that notifications will not be sent if the change was made by the user themselves or if the change was made through the REST API.

This feature is enabled by default for all mobile users. Please see the section below to disable On-Call Boosters.

Disable On-call Boosters

To disable On-Call Boosters, navigate to More in the top right On-Call Boosters and toggle to the off position.

Android 9+: Override System Volume and Do Not Disturb

❗️

Android Work Profiles and Do Not Disturb

Due to a Work Profile limitation from Android, overriding System Volume and Do Not Disturb will not work when the PagerDuty app is under a Work Profile.

Possible Workaround:
If you also install the PagerDuty app in your personal profile on the device without any additional steps, you should see the Do Not Disturb settings respected when configuring the app in the work profile.

  • High-Urgency Override System Volume: If your phone does not have Do Not Disturb enabled, but your volume slider is set to 0, PagerDuty notifications will be silent. To change this, tap the High-Urgency Override System Volume checkbox to enable.
  • High-Urgency Override Do Not Disturb: In Android 9 and up, if you'd like to bypass Do Not Disturb, tap High-Urgency Override Do Not Disturb and then enable Override Do Not Disturb in your phone’s settings.

Android 8: Override Do Not Disturb

As of Android 8, overriding Do Not Disturb can be less intuitive, since there may be additional steps to set it up successfully.

  1. Ensure that you have Override System Volume enabled in the app.

Don't see this option when you select Notifications?

If you select Notifications and don't see the menu below, you'll need to send a test notification or trigger an incident in order to receive a push notification. Once you've received your first push notification, the menus will populate.

  1. Ensure that the High-Urgency and Low-Urgency toggles are both set to on. Next, tap the text for High Urgency Notifications. This will take you to a different menu.

  1. In this menu, Override Do Not Disturb will be an option at the bottom of the screen. Make sure to toggle this on. Keep in mind, if you'd like your Low Urgency Notifications to override Do Not Disturb, you'll need to go back to the previous menu and select the text for Low Urgency Notifications.

iOS: Override Do Not Disturb

  1. Within the PagerDuty Mobile App, navigate to More in the top right. If you already had the app installed, select Update PagerDuty Contact Card. If this is your first time logging into the app, you'll be prompted to grant PagerDuty the Manage Contacts permission. You can read about how we use this permission here.
  2. Once you have the PagerDuty Contact Card, select it within your Contacts menu, and choose Add to Favorites. We recommend choosing the PagerDuty email address here, as the phone numbers we use are subject to change.
  3. Now that PagerDuty is added as a favorite, navigate to Settings Focus Do Not Disturb. Under Allowed Notifications People add the PagerDuty contact, Outgoing PagerDuty Numbers. PagerDuty phone calls will now bypass your Do Not Disturb settings.

iOS: Override Silent Mode

When you receive a phone notification, you may want your phone to audibly ring, even while it is on silent.

  1. If you haven't done so already, download PagerDuty's vCard to add PagerDuty Outgoing Numbers to your contacts.
  2. Navigate to your phone's Contacts app and select PagerDuty Outgoing Numbers.
  3. Tap Edit in the top-right, scroll down and select the row Ringtone.
  4. Activate Emergency Bypass and tap Done.
  5. Tap Done again.

iOS: Critical Alerts

Critical Alerts for iOS allow push notifications to bypass an iPhone’s Do Not Disturb and silent mode settings. You can allow high urgency incidents to map to Critical Alerts and bypass Do Not Disturb in the mobile app by navigating to Settings. Ensure that you have Push Notifications enabled, tap Critical Alerts for High-Urgency and then tap Allow.

Warning

Due to iOS features beyond our control, Critical Alerts can cause some calls made through third-party communication apps to drop when they’re sent during an ongoing call.

iOS 15 and Higher

Apple’s release of iOS 15 has introduced new features that limit app notification noise on a user’s iPhone. These features are Notification Summary and Focus and can be read about in Apple’s blog post. These can affect the way PagerDuty users receive push notifications for incidents.

Notification Summary

The Notification Summary feature allows non-critical notifications to be received at a specific time of the day to avoid taking away users’ attention during focus time. A few points to take note of with this feature:

  • Notification Summary is optional and disabled by default.
  • If desired, the PagerDuty app will need to be part of the list of chosen apps for the Summary located in Settings Notifications Scheduled Summary.
  • Critical Alerts can still be received instantly.

New PagerDuty app users will receive a prompt upon installing to either allow notifications or include them in a scheduled summary.

Allow notifications

Focus Mode

The Focus Mode feature allows users to have granular control over which apps and contacts get to notify them at the given Focus setting. You can learn more about the Focus feature here.

A few things to take note of in relation to PagerDuty mobile app notifications:

  • If Critical Alerts are off, and Focus is enabled without the PagerDuty app in the allowed apps list of that specific Focus, you will not receive PagerDuty push notifications.
  • The PagerDuty app will need to be part of the list of Allowed Apps for Notifications within the specific Focus setting.
  • If enabled, Critical Alerts will be received instantly.

MIUI and EMUI (Huawei and Xiaomi devices)

For these particular forks of Android, you may not be able to set sounds from the respective High and Low Urgency Notification Settings. Instead, you may need to perform the following:

  1. Navigate to System Notification Settings.
  2. Make sure High and Low Urgency Notifications are enabled.
  3. From here, tap either High or Low Urgency to choose your sound.

OnePlus devices

OnePlus devices running on OS 10 and higher do not fully support Override System Volume. These devices will not always override the system volume when the phone is on silent or vibrate mode.

Clear Notifications

If you would like your notifications to be cleared automatically when the app is launched, tap the checkbox next to Clear Notifications to enable.

Troubleshooting

To receive a test notification, tap Troubleshooting and you will receive a notification based on your settings. A prompt will advise you on what settings may still need to be adjusted to ensure you receive the correct notifications.

Contact Card Settings

Automatic Contact Card Management

The PagerDuty vCard is a file containing the numbers that PagerDuty notifications can come from. The vCard updates automatically by default in the mobile app, and there is nothing that needs to be configured.

Override Do Not Disturb for Starred Contacts

Tap the Override Do Not Disturb for Starred Contacts checkbox to ensure starred contacts can send PagerDuty notifications.

App Tip Notifications

App Tip Notifications are delivered locally through the mobile app, and will occasionally notify you about new features and PagerDuty tips. Disabling this feature will not affect incident-related notifications or other PagerDuty communications, (e.g., status updates, on-call handoff notifications, responder requests, etc.). Since these are local notifications, the setting selection will not be preserved if you uninstall and re-install the PagerDuty mobile app.

Depending on your device's operating system, the steps to administer this feature vary slightly:

iOS

Navigate to More (Settings) and toggle App Tip Notifications to the on or off position.

To change either swipe action:

  1. Tap Change to the right.
  2. Select which incident action you prefer: Resolve, Acknowledge; Snooze, Acknowledge; Resolve or None.
